Treatment of periodontal disease

Over 10 percent of the world population suffer from periodontal disease. In Poland this percentage is even higher, approximately 70% of population. The disease appears around 30 years of age and affects more men than women.

Periodontal disease is a disease of periodontal tissues. It appears is caused by long-lasting inflammation as a result of bacteria building up at the contact zone between teeth and gums. Multiplying bacteria lead to destruction of structures supporting the tooth in the tooth pocket.
We cannot always determine the cause of this disease. The most common factors include lack of sufficient oral hygiene, decreased immunity, hereditary factors, long-lasting stress, smoking. A direct and primary cause of development of periodontal diseases is the formation of bacterial plaque due to negligence of everyday oral hygiene. Further irregular and improper tooth cleaning leads to formation of tartar, a new, hard structure on tooth surface. It constitutes a perfect surface for further multiplication of bacteria. Tartar injures and damages gingiva, initiating its inflammation (gingivitis).

Unhealed, long-lasting gum inflammation, resulting from bacterial activity and toxins, leads to weakening of connective tissue fibres, connecting the tooth to the bone. It is reflected by lowered gums and creation of periodontal pockets. The destruction of connective tissue leads to weakening the teeth in the tooth pocket and falling out of individual or several teeth.

What is Emdogain?

Emdogain is a biology-based preparation manufactured by a Swedish firm Biora AB. This preparation is a reflection of a new, biological concept of periodontal tissue regeneration. It is based on following the biological processes occurring during natural formation of teeth. It restores tooth supporting structures destroyed by periodontal disease, fully maintaining their structure and functions.
The most important component of Emdogain is amelogenine, a protein produced by human organism only during the tooth formation period in the fetal period. It plays a vital role in the formation of tooth and its structures.
No undesired effects of use of Emdogain have been observed.

How does Emdogain work?

The tooth is fixed in the tooth socket by a special supporting structure. It consists of root cementum, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and alveolar ridge. Collagen fibre links root cementum with bone structures. Emdogain physiologically regenerates tooth supporting structures. Putting the preparation on tooth surface gives a chance of regeneration of lost structures. Regeneration means repetition of natural formation processes of tooth supporting structures, normally occurring in childhood. Emdogain gives you a chance to keep your own teeth.

What can you do to achieve best effects?

Healing of wounds after treatment using Emdogain is fast. Immediately after the preparation is put on, an intensive restoration process of tooth supporting structures starts. The complete regeneration process takes about a year, and in many cases even longer. During that period, much depends on you. The nature has given you a lot of time to influence the effect of treatment. The most important factor is a systematic and lasting co-operation with your dentist. It includes regular visits, evaluating and monitoring the treatment process, and closely following the dentist's advice and guidelines. The instructions cover such fields as proper oral hygiene, tooth brushing and intradental cleaning techniques, etc. Thanks to mutual effort it is possible to achieve the desired goal, being the protection from loss of your natural teeth for many years.
